Q: What should I look for in a balanced snack?

roxana ehsani
Roxana Ehsani M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D., L.D.N.

A: The perfect snack is one that contains fiber and protein — pairing these two nutrients together will provide a balanced, satisfying and nutritious snack. Think a fresh piece of fruit like a pear along with a handful of walnuts, baby bell peppers that you dip into a bean dip or a cup of Greek yogurt or skyr topped with blueberries. If you are picking up a packaged snack such as a chip or bar, check the label to make sure it has at least 2 to 3g of both fiber and protein each.

How to Build the Ultimate Snack Board

yumna jawad
Yumna Jawad
  1. Have fun with colors. Brighten up your snack board with different colored items, especially seasonal produce. We eat with our eyes first so play around with pops of color on your board. Choose a few specific colors or go rainbow-style for an ultra-vibrant board.
  2. Think variety with textures. I like to do a mix of fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, crackers, cheese, spreads and even packaged snacks. Not everything has to go on one board, but selecting some from each category helps to keep the snack board interesting and gives you a balance of texture as you work your way through.
  3. Go for a theme. A theme can help you decide what to include on your tray and provide some structure. You can focus on a place, season, ingredient or flavor. I like to do a Mediterranean cheese board with cucumbers, tomatoes and pomegranates for great crunch and color.

Top Tips for Getting Kids to Try New Foods

lauren jude
Lauren Jude

Integrate new foods with the tried-and-true ones. Trying new foods can be scary and overwhelming for kids. Add a new food alongside foods that your child is already familiar with. It’s like sticking your toe into the pool without the scary effort of diving completely in.

Have your little ones cook with you. At a certain age kids really value ownership and autonomy. When kids help to prepare their meals they are more likely to try new foods because they participated in the meal-making process.

Be patient. Remember that getting your child comfortable trying new foods may take time. Don’t worry if they don’t immediately jump into the process — there is no need to force kids to try new foods. Make trying new foods fun and take the pressure off.

Q: How can I make the perfect mocktail?

susan choung
Susan Choung

A: Chilled tea that’s brewed strong makes an excellent base for nonalcoholic drinks. It provides the structure and complexity you’d get from spirits so the end result is nicely dry and much more interesting than a simple juice. Try cooled hibiscus tea shaken with pink grapefruit juice, mint leaves and ice, then topped with club soda or your favorite prebiotic soda for a nutritional boost. Or for the ultimate summer refresher, try my Garden Party Mocktail: combine cooled chamomile tea with lime juice and cucumber slices. Shake and serve over ice with club soda. Made with cooling cucumbers and tart lime juice, it has a botanical intrigue reminiscent of gin, thanks to chamomile tea.
